V Venkatesh Small Novel and personally satisfying way of working

By Venkatesh Subramanian on 13/2/2015

How wonderful will it be if we are part of a value network where we only participate to the extent we add value. How better if we can be part of such an interconnected global network delivering services to international clients!

Try to analyse your normal professional day carefully and check:

  • How much time are you really adding value to clients? Can you quantify the value you have added?
  • How much time are you adding value to colleagues and subordinates in their activities towards clients? Can you quantify the value you have added?

If we are all to make a clear tabulation of our daily professional activities, often we will find that for people at the junior levels in corporations, we spend only around 50-60% of our time in activities that add tangible value to our clients and colleagues. And as we go higher in our organisation hierarchy we will find that this slowly reduces and it is just about 10% when we reach top echelons in our organisations.

Are we really forgetting who pays us all at the end in our pursuit of a corporate career? Are our share holders paying us higher salaries and bonuses for the ones who add the least value to our clients? Or are our share holders paying us to squeeze the maximum value out of our teams and/or our corporate brand?

Do we believe there is an alternative to this drudgery? What if we can all assemble a network of people, who just add  the value they are expected to add to a client? How enriching will this network be to the content of our professional lives and the value delivered to clients? Do you think we can create a more fairer compensation structure in such a value network? Can modern digital technologies make this possible?
